World Blood Donor Day

Every year on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. Established in 2004, this day serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gift of blood and also to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure that all individuals and communities have access to affordable and timely supplies of safe and quality-assured blood and blood products, as an integral part of universal health coverage and a key component of effective health systems.
During the crisis of COVID-19, blood donations are critical. Though the flow of life has been disrupted for many of us, this may not be the case for many people with chronic conditions or other health problems, including cancer, trauma survivors, transplant recipients, people with sickle cell disease or those undergoing non-elective surgeries.
If you are healthy and meet eligibility requirements, it is still safe to give blood, blood donation centers are taking extra precautions to protect the health and safety of all blood donors and staff.
